geofft pointed us at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/upstart-devel/2013-February/002353.html
which talks about using Upstart for user sessions, in place of Xsession or gnome-session spawning the entire world. THis will likely be available for testing in Raring but will not be the default. We should see if Upstart's parallelized nature can be used for awesome, like installing packages at login time.
