Specify gcc as the link program on Solaris; otherwise, /usr/ccs/bin/ld is invoked directly, which does not link in the gcc library needed to resolve some symbols, resulting in unreferenced symbol errors at runtime.

Set mandir explicitly; the build system overrides the default setting of ${prefix}/man.

Revert 1.39: it breaks cases like "make install prefix=/foo" (and quoting the setting is ineffective, as the offending packages check if the mandir setting matches the default, and overrides it if so).
