Ticket #166, namely that diversions and AppArmor? don't play well together, strikes again. ezyang reports that printing to lpr from evince on Karmic doesn't work until he disables AppArmor?, presumably because the profile lets evince use /usr/bin/lpr but not /usr/bin/lpr.debathena.

It may be relevant that when the problem does occur, it's always in the second invocation, when there aren't actually any files to download.

Quoting from the bug, the reporter points out a workaround in apt documented as "A value of zero MUST be specified if the remote host does not properly linger on TCP connections - otherwise data corruption will occur. Hosts which require this are in violation of RFC 2068."

We believe this to be the cause of the transient installer failures.
