Description

We should either fix it, or remove it, but it's basically unusable now. This is sort of related to #541 and #662.

Actually, this apparently it's quite true. [citation needed]

Even if it's not broken, it needs updating for Unity. We may wish to look at how dh_ubuntu_defaults and friends add new Unity launchers.

Geoff also says to look at  https://launchpad.net/hello-unity

I looked at hello-unity. It does tell us very nicely how to add quicklists to the launcher, but only while the app is running. I don't think we need a Python app to maintain the software menu. Upstream has decided that you should just hit the Windows key and start typing, e.g. "MATLAB" which totally works. This is foreign and scary to us, but is exactly how undergrads are used to launching MATLAB on their Windows 7 machine.

We should, however, prioritize #581.
