Description
It would be cool if there were an easy way to install Matlab on Debathena. Anders has some state on this (a draft package, for example, that has some issues related to matlab being a bad neighbor in the filesystem)

Installing Student MATLAB on Debathena (or any Linux) is fairly straightforward - it's just a tarball of the MATLAB installation directory. It touches nothing outside of the directory in to which it is untarred.
Regardless, we'd ideally like to move away from our own distributions of MATLAB and simply distribute the MathWorks?' installer with a license file. That way, installation issues become their problem, and not ours.
Additionally, as with the VPN client, it seems like setting up the infrastructure necessary to serve protected software (and the steps the client must take to authenticate) are far more effort than simply documenting the installation procedure.

IS&T is moving away from MATLAB distribution, and is instead focusing on documenting the process of obtaining and installing it directly from The MathWorks?.

We should revisit this for cluster machines, because it would make things a lot faster. I'll double-check that this is feasible from a licensing perspective.
CMU has packaging ( http://source.fac.cs.cmu.edu/gitweb/?p=fac/matlab.git). They solve this by putting all the licensed software in a section (multiverse, for example) and ACL the pool/ directory for it. So it's listed in the Release files, but actually downloading the .deb fails if you're off campus. Last time, that was determined to be Wrong(tm) and Unacceptable(tm). I'm going to propose it again, and decide that it's totally fine, provided we create a new metapackage that pulls it in (debathena-mit-campus-only-software-no-really-do-not-install-this-off-campus).
