    1 Geoff and I discussed this this morning.  We should have a cron job run every 4 hours and stat /var/run/athena-nologin.  If it exists and is > 4 hours old, reboot, because auto-update is wedged.  It's possible the issues we saw on w20-575-{2..5} were isolated, but since auto-update is our only recovery hook, we should make sure it doesn't get wedged. 
     1It may be relevant that when the problem does occur, it's always in the second invocation, when there aren't actually any files to download.
